2016-2017 LifeSPAN YEAR
10-1-16 through 9-30-17
WELCOME TO THE EUPISD LifeS.P.A.N.
(Life Sustaining Physical Activity and Nutrition)
WHAT IS LifeSPAN? Life S.P.A.N. is a program funded under SNAP-Ed (the education portion of supplemental nutrition assistance program from the USDA). In this program, nutrition facilitators will work with classroom teachers to implement the Harvest of the Month curriculum for all students K-5. In grades K-3, the students will learn about nutrition through taste testing fruits and vegetables. The 4-5 students will learn how to cook while learning the broad nutrition concepts of fruits and vegetables. In addition to the K-5 classes, we program in GSRP/Head Start preschool classrooms, and we have a summer session for middle school students. "Grow it, Try it, Like it" is the preschool curriculum, which introduces one fruit or vegetable each session while teaching the students nutrition. Our middle school program uses the "Let's Cook" curriculum to teach cooking skills around fruits and veggies.
What Classroom Teachers Can Expect: Nutrition facilitators will work with K-5 classroom teachers of participating schools to schedule six tasting/cooking lessons each school year. The tasting lessons in the K-3 classrooms will be 1 hour long and the cooking lessons in the 4-5 classrooms will be 1.5 hours. These lessons will be a supplement to help reiterate concepts students learn in the Michigan Model for Health. Classroom teachers will receive correlation documents for each lesson that will include correlations for CCSS ELA and Math as well as Social Studies and Science GLCES. Teachers will also be given story books for their classroom libraries that are specific to each nutrition lesson taught as well as use of nutrition tubs which contain aids for students when learning about nutrition. Training will be offered to teachers who need to be refreshed in the Michigan Model for Health Curriculum, or to teachers new to Michigan Model.
